With just days in office, the new MEC for Transport Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Sipho Hlomuka will on Thursday (18 August 2022) hand over two major contractors for the rehabilitation of two major roads at an estimated value of more than R210 million.
The rehabilitation of these two roads P242 and R603 in eThekwini Metro is part of the provincial post floods recovery and reconstruction plan.
Main road P242 traverses through the KwaMakhutha Township (wards 67, 93 & 94) within the eThekwini Metropolitan. The project entails the major rehabilitation of Main Road P242 to the black-top surface between the areas of KwaMakhutha township and Galaria Mall. The total length of this road is approximately 9.62 km at an estimated total project cost of R 168 million.
Subsequent to the flood damages that occurred in the Province in December 2021, R603 was badly damaged. The magnitude of the wash-away posed a significant health and safety risk to motorists and Main Road P21-2 (R603) was closed over the affected section. The repair of Main road R603 will benefit the community of Mbumbulu, Ilovu, and Adams and will contribute to the social and economic upliftment of the community. The estimated amount for the repair of this project is R 24 million.
MEC Hlomuka will be accompanied by members of the portfolio committee, traditional leaders, members of the interfaith and other political leaders.
