Most of the power outages recorded recently are due to contractors and property owners disregarding signs of underground cables when excavating. This then plunges thousands of residents into darkness.
Contractors and property owners who wish to excavate must follow the proper procedure. They must visit Municipal offices to get a GIS record of the location of the infrastructure beneath the ground before work commences.
Damage to underground cables not only results in power outages but can also prove fatal or result in severe injury caused by electric shock and explosion.
