Induna Sifiso Shange says the community is happy that at long last their suffering is ending. Many people have died in the past after being washed away.
There is no alternative route for the community to access Pietermaritzburg City Centre.
MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma remarked: “This community is isolated and always battles to access schools, and health facilities. They are forced to use this bridge and when there are floods, people get washed away,” we have responded decisively.
Duma further revealed that an integrated approach has been adopted to fast-track the bridge’s construction.
Department of Public Works, South African National Defense Force and Umsunduzi Local Municipality are working together to turn around the situation.
