The Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment creation has ordered the Chinese Construction company, Zhongmei Engineering Group to cease all work activities after a worker was fatally injured on 23 October 2024.
It is alleged that the worker died on site after a heavy object fell on him from a crane he was operating.
According to the executive director within the labour ministry, Lydia Indombo, the labour ministry has in terms of the health and safety regulations instructed Zhongmei Engineering Group Pty Ltd to stop construction work as the ministry observed serious unsafe working practices that were in contravention with the Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
Indombo said that after an enquiry, the ministry established that the employer failed to provide a safe working environment that is safe and risk free to the safety of employees by instructing an employee (the deceased) to carry out heavy work, involving loading heavy loads with a crane at a high height without a helmet.
It is further reported that the worker was unqualified to carry out the task as rigger and did so without supervision.
