The Govan Mbeki Rd (W4) IRT project is part of the Landsdowne-Wetton Corridor (West) rollout of the larger City of Cape Town’s Integrated Rapid Transit (IRT) System implementation.
The contract was awarded to the Govan Mbeki IRT JV, a joint venture between Civils 2000 and Grinaker-LTA, in August 2021, and the MOA was signed in June 2022. Construction commenced in July 2022, with a completion date of May 2026.
Scope of Works
- Traffic accommodation.
- Services diversions and new services installations.
- Road widening and upgrades, including 800 m of Hanover Park Avenue.
- Bitumen stabilized material (BSM1 ) foamed bitumen base using recycled asphalt (RA) from the existing pavement.
- Removal of the existing median islands.
- Construction of 3 km of 240 mm thick red-coloured CRCP concrete bus lanes along Govan Mbeki Road and Jan Smuts medians.
- Construction of a free-standing, elevated traffic circle above the intersection of Govan Mbeki Road with Jan Smuts Drive.
- Mechanically stabilized earth walls (MSEW) to retain the approaches to the bridge/circle.
- Retaining walls and boundary walls and fencing.
