On 27 November the first sod was turned at the Hartenbos wastewater treatment works, marking the implementation of a solar photo voltaic plant with a battery energy storage system.
Good progress is being made with construction and the project is on schedule.
The project started in April 2024 and is anticipated to be completed in October 2025. The site is located north of the R102 and the N2.
This innovative energy solution will operate as a microgrid for the site. Under normal conditions, the system will remain connected to the power grid.
However, if the grid supply is interrupted, the battery energy storage system will take over the supply, supported by the solar photovoltaic system during sunlight hours. Standby diesel generators will provide additional support when needed.
Photographs show the latest development this week in comparison to December 2024.
